NMJ541: Research and Investigation Skills Development

The Research and Investigation Skills Development course explores the fundamentals of research vital to journalists. Students will evaluate qualitative and quantitative research, including the ethics of responsible research, validity and reliability, and the findings, limitations, and implications of research studies. They will learn to calculate descriptive statistics and mine research databases, public records, and data repositories for background information and numerical data to create infographics and data visualizations. Students will evaluate the credibility and biases of sources, including experts, and practice interviewing skills that support their own reporting. Through the course, students will demonstrate their skills through a series of related publications.
